Huge fire in E. Rodriguez displaces thousands

Sunday, April 25, 2010, a huge fire burned along a residential area near E. Rodriguez Avenue burning over 200 houses and displacing over 2,500 families. The fire caused heavy traffic in the area as residents rushed to salvage their belongings by placing them on the road.

The fire started somewhere in front of E. de los Santos Medical Center and is thought to have originated in a three-story house located in the densely populated barangay, Damayang Lagi. Reports state that the fire was reported at around 4 p.m. and was put out at around 8:45 p.m.. It is said to have easily spread to other houses due to the strong winds. Numerous blasts were heard due to the stores that sell LPG in the area.

The Mayor of Quezon City, Sonny Belmonte, has set up soup kitchens and temporary areas to rest in schools, as well as, set up a command center nearby to see to the needs of the victims.

While there have been reports of injuries sustained due to the fire, there are no reported fatalities as of yet.

The summer heat must be causing a lot of fires both directly and indirectly. The fire occurred so soon after the fire at Rustan's grocery at Shangri-la Mall.
